Kickboxing

Kickboxing got its start in the late 1950's by a Karate master by the name of Tatsuo Yamada. Tatsuo was also interested in Muay Thai, because Karate rules did not allow contact when sparring. Tatsuo wanted to hold Karate matches and tournaments with a full contact points system, but practitioners wouldn't allow this to happen. Tatsuo held a Muay Thai tournament, in Japan and studied the art closely to see if he could develop a new martial art combining Muay Thai with Karate in some way. Tatsuo came up with the art of Karate-boxing, which was full contact, and the opponents were aloud to use punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. Throwing and butting were permitted in the beginning but after a while it was ruled out.

Kickboxing gained a fast appeal to the world after it started getting broadcasted on television in the early 1970's. Soon Kickboxing aired 3 nights a week and began getting North Americans interested in this new Martial Art. It wasn't long before America was holding large tournaments for Kickboxing, drawing large crowds. Soon after Kickboxing grew to Europe, Australia and South America. With Kickboxing gaining worldwide popularity, different countries mastered the style and made it their own such as Indian Boxing, Korean Kickboxing (which is a mixture between Muay Thai and Tae Kwon Do).

On international Kickboxing rules there are three different variations: semi contact, light contact and full contact. Semi contact is where two fighter's main goals are to score points, so speed and accuracy is needed. The referee and judges count the points, and halt the match at the time of a point. With light contact the fighters will fight continuously until the referee calls to halt the match, and the referee does not count the points. Their position is to make sure that both fighters honor the rules of a light contact match. Full contact is carried out with full force, with every kick and punch in the last 3-x 2minute rounds, and the judges count points on scoring cards.
