Although Mixed Martial Arts is growing worldwide as though it is something brand new, most would be surprised to find out that it has roots dated back to the late 1800's. Tournaments consisted of a wide range of wrestling styles, and the matches were no holds barred fights. These mixed tournaments usually consisted of Jiu Jitsu vs. Boxing fighters in Europe and Asia. It wasn't long before it became evident - fighters that had training in striking as well as in grappling were dominating these Mixed Martial Arts tournaments. The most popular disciplines of Martial Arts are broken down into three sections: stand up, clinch and ground. Martial Arts that are the most known in stand up are Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and full contact Karate. The more popular Martial Arts for clinch are freestyle, Greco Roman wrestling, Sambo and Judo. For ground the main Martial Arts styles used are submission grappling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Luta Livre, shoot wrestling, catch wrestling, Judo and Sambo.
