The first thing you must know with any weapon, is that it's just an extension of someone's body. Having said that you do not want to go against your opponent's knife, you instead want to go against your opponent. It requires more confidence then a regular fight, because your life is at stake. Not to say it isn't in a fist fight, it's just a lot easier to take someone's life with a sharp weapon, then it is with your hands on most occasions. If you are going to survive a knife fight your focus must be on your opponent, not your opponent's knife, and not your knife either. Just like how I mentioned about a weapon being an extension of your body, think of the knife as though it was your hand. Most people lose against experienced fighters simply because they depend too much on their weapon. When the person focusing on their weapon drops or their weapon is disabled, they are usually easy to defeat because the thing that they were depending on to win the fight is no longer in their possession. Make sure that you choose a knife that suits you in terms of comfort size, and grip. Also, before you take lessons in any weapon-fighting, make sure you have a good knowledge of hand-to-hand combat of some sort. This will make you a more confident fighter, as you know that you can hold your own without a weapon. Also, should practice disarming your opponent as well so this way you are able to quickly put your opponent at a disadvantage.
