Nunchaku
It is believed that Nunchaku gained their popularity in Okinawa, Japan in the 17th century. Okinawa was invaded, and they developed these weapons as a defense to the Satsuma daimyo's weaponry. Peasant farmers were forbidden from using conventional weaponry such as swords or blades, so they would build Nunchaku from their farm tools for protection. Consisting of two equal sections of wood the size of one's forearm, connected by a cord or chain. The chain's ideal length is one's palm width. The Okinawan Nunchaku is shaped octagonal, while the Chinese ones are traditionally rounded. Nunchakus were made from hardwood such as oak, that was submerged in mud. This prevented the weapon from any sort of rotting. Nowadays Nunchaku are made from a lot of different materials such as plastic, fiberglass, and light metals such as aluminum to name a few. When practicing a kata, Nunchaku are always held at the base of the handle - this has been tradition. However, when one is free styling with this weapon it is held at the top of the handles, making it easier to have control. Nunchaku, when used correctly, can be a very distracting weapon for an opponent. This is because of how fast they move, and in a fan motion. This makes it easy to strike an opponent when they are dazed by the motion.
