The Katana (Ninja Sword)

The Katana blade was created in the 13th century, to accelerate battle conditions for the samurai. The samurai wore the sword, with the blade facing up, allowing them to draw their weapon while cutting their opponent in the process. The length of the blade differs. In the 14th and 15th century, it ranged from 70cm to 73cm. In the 16th century, the average length was 60cm, and the older style of 70cm to 73cm re-gained it's popularity in the late 16th century.

The original Japanese sword is made from special steel called tamahagane, consisting of hard, high carbon steel and low carbon steel. The carbon in the sword aide the blade in absorbing shock. The combined steel is heated and hammered for several days, and then it is folded and hammered to squeeze out impurities. The sword is folded sixteen times before it is hammered into a sword shape, sometimes curved slightly or straight. The sword maker would then coat the blade with wet clay, providing heat insulation so the blades edge will be hardened.

There are quite a few martial arts that focus on sword fighting that still exists today. Battōjutsu is a technique, meaning techniques for engaging in a sword, emphasizing on cutting with the sword. Iaidō is another Japanese martial art consisting of polished, calculated movements cutting the opponent, removing blood with the blade. Iaijutsu is the art of drawing the sword. Kenjutsu meaning the art of the sword - this consists mainly of kata. Shinkendo was the art that the samurais studied, which translated means "the real way of the sword."
